# Console Care 101 — 1) Exterior Cleaning (Dry → Spot Wipe)
**Goal:** Make the console presentable and play-ready **without risking labels, coatings, or ports**.
**Time:** 2–3 minutes
**Tools:** Lint-free microfiber cloth, cotton swabs, 99% isopropyl alcohol (a few drops), **soft** brush (ESD/camera/makeup)
---
## Safety first
- **Power off & unplug.** Remove carts/discs and accessories.
- **No direct spray.** Put liquid on the *cloth/swab*, not on the console.
- **Test a hidden spot** on decals or soft-touch coatings.
---
## Quick steps
1) **Dry dusting** — Wipe the shell with a dry microfiber; use a soft brush for vents and seams.
2) **Crevices** — Roll a **dry** cotton swab along grooves, around buttons, and port lips.
3) **Spot wipe** — Dampen a *corner* of the cloth with a **tiny** IPA drop. Dab → light **one-direction** wipe.
4) **Finish dry** — Immediately buff with a dry side to remove streaks.
5) **Final check** — Ensure no residue by labels, screw holes, or seams.
---
## Do / Don’t
| ✅ Do | ❌ Don’t |
| --- | --- |
| One-direction wiping | Soak or spray directly |
| Keep liquids away from ports/holes | Scrub decals/logos/lenses |
| Swap to a fresh swab as soon as it grays | Use acetone, bleach, abrasives |
---
## Tools & substitutes
- **Cloth:** Microfiber (best) or **white 100% cotton rag**, pre-washed, **no softener**.
- **Brush:** Soft ESD brush / camera lens brush / soft makeup brush.
- **Liquids:** 99% IPA or plastic-safe contact cleaner **sparingly**.
---
## Common pitfalls
- Dark rags may **bleed dye** with IPA → use **white cotton**.
- Frayed edges shed lint → cut cleanly.
- Glossy “piano black” surfaces need a **microfiber finish**.
---
## When to escalate
- Yellowing removal, sticky soft-touch coatings, paint/clear-coat issues, cracks.
- Persistent smoke/odor film after gentle cleaning.
