Console Care 101 — 5) Storage & Long-Term Care

**Goal:** Keep consoles and carts in good shape when they’re not in use—no yellowing, no leaks, no mold.

**Time:** 3–5 minutes
**Tools:** Lint-free cloth, zip bags or bins, silica gel (desiccant), loose cable ties, labels

---

## Environment basics
- **Cool, dry, dark.** Avoid direct sun and damp places.
- **Off the floor.** Use a shelf; add desiccant packs in each bin.
- **Air a little.** Do not seal wet air inside—dry first, then bag.

---

## Before you store
1) **Wipe & dust** — Quick dry wipe to remove oils and dust.
2) **Remove batteries** — Take out AA/AAA/coin cells from handhelds and carts.
3) **Cable care** — Coil **loosely**; no sharp bends at the plug.
4) **Label** — Date and condition (“Cleaned & tested / In service”).

---

## For cartridges & discs
- **Carts** — Low-lint wipe on edge contacts; store upright if possible.
- **Optical discs** — Sleeves or cases; avoid stacking bare discs.

---

## Shelves & bins
- **Separate by type.** Consoles / controllers / carts / accessories.
- **Desiccant** — Refresh packs every few months.
- **Optional:** Anti-corrosion paper in metal-heavy bins.

---

## Monthly check
- Spot for **condensation, smells, or leaks**.
- Replace tired desiccant; re-wipe high-touch areas.

---

## Do / Don’t
| ✅ Do | ❌ Don’t |
| --- | --- |
| Store cool, dry, and off the floor | Attics, basements, or sunny windows |
| Remove batteries for long storage | Leave cells installed (leak risk) |
| Coil cables loosely | Tight ties or sharp bends |
| Use low-lint wipes for contacts | Spray chemicals inside ports |

---

## When to escalate
- Mold or nicotine film that returns after cleaning
- Battery leakage on PCBs (needs teardown)
- Cracked plastics or warped shells (structural repair)
