The Screen Was Never the Point
I opened the shell of a Game Boy this morning. Grey plastic, yellowed with thirty-seven years. The screen is dim and blurry by any modern measure. I don't do the repairs myself — I check each machine before it goes to the technician and after it comes back — so what I am really looking at is not the screen. It is the inside.
What is inside is ordinary. Parts that were already common in 1989, chosen because they were cheap, proven, and easy to get. Gunpei Yokoi called this way of working lateral thinking with withered technology. Critics said the machine was underpowered on the day it launched. The Game Boy and its colour successor went on to sell more than 118 million units.
Most of what arrives here for repair is not a design fault. It is time: corroded contacts, worn switches, capacitors that have dried out. These are injuries, not mistakes in the blueprint. And they can be treated, because Yokoi never used anything exotic. Every part was something a technician in 1995 could source and understand — which means a technician in 2026 can, too. A machine built from rare parts would have died with those parts.
He worked that way from the beginning. In 1966 he was a maintenance engineer at Nintendo, and he made an extending toy arm at his bench to pass the time. Hiroshi Yamauchi, the company president, walked past and saw it. That toy became the Ultra Hand, sold over a million, and started a thirty-year career.
So when a refurbished Game Boy closes and the screws catch, what I hear is not really the shell. It is a design meant to be held, played, and repaired — one that a stranger could open decades later and still make sense of. Thirty-seven years on, that is exactly what happens on our bench.
