PC Engine Buyer's Guide — Models, Power & HuCards

It is the size of a coaster. NEC built the PC Engine in 1987 around a card slot instead of a cartridge port, and the result is still the smallest serious console anyone has made. In North America the same machine wore a black plastic shell and was called the TurboGrafx-16. In Japan it stayed white, and it stayed small.

TL;DR (Quick Answers)

  • Power: Japan is 100 V. Fine as-is in 110–120 V regions. Use a step-down transformer in 220–240 V regions.
  • Region: Japanese HuCards do not fit or run on a US TurboGrafx-16, and TurboGrafx cards do not run on a PC Engine. The pinout was deliberately changed.
  • Video: the original PC Engine outputs RF by default. The good picture comes off the expansion port or from a later model.
  • Controllers: one port only on the original. A multitap is not a luxury here, it is how you get a second player.

1) Which PC Engine Is Which (The Model Numbers You Are Searching For)

  • PI-TG001 — the original white PC Engine (1987). The famous small one. One controller port, RF output as standard.
  • CoreGrafx (PI-TG3) and CoreGrafx II. Same machine in dark grey, with composite and stereo audio out of the box. For most buyers this is the easy answer.
  • SuperGrafx (PI-TG4). Larger, more powerful, and only a handful of games ever used the extra hardware. A collector’s machine.
  • PC Engine Duo / Duo-R / Duo-RX. HuCard and CD-ROM in one box, with no stack of separate units. The most convenient way to play the CD library.
  • Shuttle, GT, LT. The odd ones — a boomerang-shaped budget model, a handheld, and a laptop-style machine with a built-in screen.

If someone hands you a white console with a single controller port, it is a PI-TG001 and you will want a video solution. If it is grey, it probably already has composite out.

2) Power & Safety

  • Japanese consoles are built for 100 V, 50/60 Hz.
  • 110–120 V (US, Canada, parts of Asia): generally fine as-is.
  • 220–240 V (EU, UK, Australia, New Zealand): use a step-down transformer rated at roughly twice the draw.
  • The PC Engine uses a centre-negative barrel plug. This is the opposite of most modern adapters, and the wrong polarity will damage the console. If the original adapter is missing, check the polarity marking before you plug anything in.

3) Video Outputs (Best Picture for Your Setup)

  • RF (original PI-TG001): works, but it is the weakest picture and needs a TV that can still tune an analogue channel. Most modern sets cannot.
  • Composite / stereo (CoreGrafx, CoreGrafx II, Duo family): the straightforward answer, and why these models are usually the better buy.
  • Expansion port: the original’s port carries clean video and is where every good aftermarket adapter connects.
  • Modern TVs: almost none have an analogue input. Budget for an AV-to-HDMI converter, or a scaler if you care about the picture.

4) Region & Software

The HuCard is the whole story. A Japanese HuCard and an American TurboChip look identical, but the connector was reversed so they will not interchange. Converters exist, and so do modified consoles, but a stock Japanese machine plays Japanese cards.

CD-ROM software adds a second layer: the CD-ROM2 and Super CD-ROM2 formats need the matching system card in the HuCard slot. If a CD game boots to a screen asking for a newer system, that is what it is telling you.

5) Fast Cheat Sheet by Region

  • US / Canada: plug straight in. A CoreGrafx with composite is the least effort.
  • UK / EU: step-down transformer, composite or RGB via the expansion port.
  • Australia / New Zealand: step-down transformer, and skip RF entirely — local sets will not tune it.
  • Anywhere with a modern TV only: buy the video solution at the same time as the console. It is the step people forget.

6) Troubleshooting (60-Second Fixes)

  • Black screen with a HuCard inserted: almost always the card edge. Clean the contacts and reseat it firmly.
  • Sound but no picture on an original: you are on RF and the TV has not tuned it. Move to the expansion port.
  • CD unit spins and fails: the Duo family uses capacitors that age. This is a known, repairable fault, not a dead machine.
  • Only one controller port: that is correct. You need a multitap.

  • Is the SuperGrafx worth it? As an object, yes. As a games machine, only a few titles use what makes it different.
