Famicom Buyer's Guide — HVC-001 vs HVC-101, Power, Region & the Disk System

The Famicom went on sale in Japan on 15 July 1983 for ¥14,800, in red and white plastic, with both controllers wired permanently into the machine. Nintendo expected it to last a couple of years. It was still being manufactured in 2003. If you are buying one now, almost every question you have comes down to one thing: which of the three very different machines called “Famicom” is the one you actually want.

TL;DR (Quick Answers)

  • The short answer: if you want to plug it into a television you already own, buy an HVC-101 (New Famicom / AV Famicom) or a Sharp Twin Famicom. Both give you a normal composite picture.
  • The original HVC-001 outputs RF only. It is the iconic red-and-white one, and on a modern TV it will show you nothing until you solve that.
  • Region: Famicom cartridges are 60-pin. NES cartridges are 72-pin. They do not fit each other without an adapter.
  • Disk System: the rubber drive belt perishes with age. Every Disk System we sell has had the belt replaced, and we sell the belts separately too.
  • Before it ships: every console is cleaned and gameplay-tested, not just powered on. We will send photos of the exact unit on request.

1) Which Famicom Is Which (The Model Numbers You Are Searching For)

  • HVC-001 — the original Famicom (1983). Red and white, gold expansion port on the front, and both controllers hardwired to the console. Controller II has a microphone and no Start or Select buttons. RF output only.
  • HVC-101 — the New Famicom, usually sold as the “AV Famicom” (1993). The late redesign, in grey and cream. Composite video and detachable controllers. This is the easy answer for most buyers, and it is what we stock most of.
  • Sharp Twin Famicom (AN-505BK / AN-500R / AN-500B). A Famicom and a Disk System in one box, built by Sharp under licence, with composite output as standard. If you want the Disk System library without stacking hardware, this is the machine.
  • HVC-022 — the Family Computer Disk System (1986). Not a console. It is a disk drive that sits under an HVC-001 and plays rewritable Disk Cards.

One warning about the words, because it costs people money. “AV Famicom” usually means the HVC-101. But an original HVC-001 that has had an AV modification fitted is also, quite reasonably, described as an AV Famicom — we sell those too, and they are excellent. They are not the same object. If the picture output matters to you, read the model number rather than the nickname.

2) The Video Problem (Read This Before You Choose)

This is the single thing that decides which Famicom you should buy.

  • HVC-001: RF out only. It needs a television that can still tune an analogue channel, and almost no set made in the last fifteen years can. An RF-to-HDMI box will get a picture, but a poor one.
  • HVC-001 with an AV modification: composite added properly by hand. You keep the original red-and-white machine and get a picture you can actually use.
  • HVC-101 and Twin Famicom: composite out of the box. Plug in, done.

If you are buying the console to play it rather than to display it, do not buy an unmodified HVC-001 unless you have already decided how you are going to get a picture out of it.

3) Power & Safety

  • Japanese consoles are built for 100 V, 50/60 Hz.
  • 110–120 V (US, Canada, parts of Asia): generally fine as-is.
  • 220–240 V (EU, UK, Australia, New Zealand): use a step-down transformer rated at roughly twice the draw.
  • The Famicom family uses an external DC adapter, not a mains lead. The original HVC-002 outputs DC 10 V at 850 mA, centre-negative — the tip is the negative side. Check both figures before you plug in anything else: a modern adapter of the wrong polarity or voltage will fit the socket perfectly and damage the console. The same HVC-002 also powers the Super Famicom.

4) Region & Software

The Famicom and the NES are the same computer in different boxes, but Nintendo changed the cartridge connector: 60 pins in Japan, 72 pins in North America and Europe. A Famicom cartridge will not physically enter an NES, and vice versa, without a pin converter.

There is no region lockout chip to fight in the way later consoles have. The Japanese library is simply the Japanese library — and it is the larger and stranger one, because the Disk System titles never left.

5) The Disk System, Honestly

The Disk System is the best reason to own a Famicom rather than an NES, and it is also the part most likely to arrive broken from a seller who has not opened it.

  • The drive is turned by a rubber belt that perishes with age. A thirty-year-old belt has usually gone soft or snapped. The symptom is a drive that stalls part-way through loading, and an ERR.21 or ERR.22 on screen. ERR.02 is a different fault — it means the drive has no power at all, so check the batteries or the adapter before you blame the belt.
  • This is a repair, not a death. We replace the belt on every Disk System and Twin Famicom we sell, and we stock replacement belts on their own if you are fixing one you already have.
  • Disk Cards are magnetic and rewritable. Some have degraded. A game that will not load is not always the drive’s fault.

6) Controllers

  • HVC-001: the two controllers are wired in. You cannot unplug a worn one and replace it — it is repaired, not swapped. Controller II carries a microphone instead of Start and Select, and a small number of games use it.
  • HVC-101: detachable controllers, so a tired pad is a five-second fix.
  • The front expansion port on the HVC-001 is where the light gun, the Family BASIC keyboard and the third-party pads connect. The HVC-101 keeps the same 15-pin port — it is moved to the right-hand side of the console rather than removed.

7) Fast Cheat Sheet by Region

  • US / Canada: plug straight in. An HVC-101 is the least effort.
  • UK / EU: step-down transformer, and choose composite — PAL sets will not tune Japanese RF at all.
  • Australia / New Zealand: step-down transformer, composite only.
  • Anywhere with a modern TV only: buy the video solution at the same time as the console. It is the step people forget.

8) Troubleshooting (60-Second Fixes)

  • Grey or flickering screen with a cartridge in: the connector. Clean the cartridge edge and reseat it. The Famicom’s 60-pin slot is far more forgiving than the NES’s, so this usually works first time.
  • Nothing at all on a modern TV: you have an unmodified HVC-001 on RF. That is the machine, not a fault.
  • Disk System shows ERR.21 or ERR.22 while loading: the drive belt. See section 5. ERR.02 is not the belt — it means no power reaching the drive.
  • Controller II has no Start button: correct. It never did.

9) What We Do Before It Ships

Every machine is cleaned, the cartridge slot is checked, belts are replaced where the design uses one, and it is gameplay-tested rather than just switched on. We photograph the exact unit and will send those photos before you buy if you ask. Where a console has a fault or a missing accessory, it is written in the listing, not hidden in it.

  • Will my NES games work? Not without a 60-to-72-pin adapter.
  • Which model should I start with? HVC-101 if you want to play tonight. HVC-001 if you want the object that sat under a Japanese television in 1983.
  • Do I need the Disk System? Only for the Disk System library — but that library contains games that were never released any other way.
  • Is the Twin Famicom worth it? If you want both halves, yes. One box, composite output, and no stack.
  • Are the controllers really attached? On the HVC-001, yes. It is the first thing everyone is surprised by.
