What does a Neo Geo AES cost?

Four things move an AES price more than anything else:

  • What is inside the machine. Both consoles here carry a UNIBIOS chip, so they run Japanese, US and European carts and boot in any language. A stock, unmodified AES costs less and plays less.
  • How many controllers come with it. An AES that arrives with two original SNK pads is a complete two-player machine on the day it lands. A bare console is not.
  • The cartridge itself. AES carts are priced one by one, never by the shelf. A headline fighter sits at the top of the range; a quieter title sits near the bottom.
  • Condition and testing. Every AES here is cleaned and tested by hand in Japan before it is listed.

The AES was SNK's home version of its own arcade hardware — the same silicon, moved out of the cabinet and into a living room. That is why it was never cheap in 1990, and why a working one still deserves to be bought carefully.
