This is the one game where the hero you trusted becomes the villain. Mario — the one who was always supposed to come and rescue you — stands in front of the cage, getting in your way. The creators wanted Donkey Kong himself to be the star, but that huge body was hard to move as a character. So they made a small son instead, and left the big one up top, still captive. A technical dead end gave birth to a new hero.
