This is the game built to breathe life back into unsold arcade machines — and the job went to a newcomer who had never designed a single game before: Shigeru Miyamoto. President Yamauchi, and Gunpei Yokoi who supervised him, saw something in him that felt different from everyone else. When a planned Popeye license fell through, that very constraint forced a new cast into being, and Mario stepped onto a screen for the first time.

“What draws me in most is the arguments that wouldn’t come together between Yokoi and Miyamoto. Yet here it produced something good — perhaps because it was a debate, not a quarrel. Both men aimed only at the same target, how do we make this fun?, never at their own pride. If you must argue, aim at the same target — then even if you lose, something still remains.”
