The Story

F1 Circus Special: Pole to Win

Most racing games buy a licence. Nichibutsu bought a season. From 1991 to 1993 the arcade company was an actual sponsor of Team Lotus — real money, real risk, in real Formula One — and that is why this 1992 PC Engine CD game carries the Lotus name honestly. The drivers in it are Mika Häkkinen, years before his two world titles, and Johnny Herbert. The credits list the team's own technical director Peter Wright and chief designer Chris Murphy. It is not a simulation pretending to be real. It is a record of a relationship that existed outside the game. Committing all the way changes what you are allowed to say afterwards.
