The Story
Shanghai
This one deserves the whole story. In December 1979 a Stanford student named Brodie Lockard came down wrong from a trampoline and woke on a ventilator, unable to move his arms or his legs. Someone arranged for a PLATO computer terminal to be brought into his hospital room. He learned to type with a stick held in his mouth, and in 1981 he built a digital version of the tile-matching puzzle he had seen played on the ward. Activision published it in 1986 and it sold on the order of ten million copies. They also marketed it as an ancient Chinese game — which it is not, and which Lockard himself never claimed. It reached the PC Engine on 30 October 1987, the day the machine itself went on sale. One man, one mouthstick, one borrowed terminal. That is where this came from.
— The shopkeeper, Enjoy Game Japan
Used. Tested and working. HuCARD only — the case and manual are not included. The card has scuffs and scratches from normal use.
Please check before you buy: this is an NTSC-J (Japanese region) HuCARD. It needs a Japanese PC Engine, or a system modified for region-free play, and it will not fit a North American TurboGrafx-16 without an adapter.
Used HuCARDs are never manufactured again — what is on the shelf is simply what survived. This one was cleaned and tested by hand here in Japan before it was listed. If you would like photos of this exact card before you buy, just send us a message and we will gladly send them.
📖 Curious about Shanghai? I wrote its whole story — how it was made and what made it special — in our Museum. Read the story → — The shopkeeper, Japan 🇯🇵
🎮 Prefer it ready to play, right out of the box? We also hand-pack tested PC Engine sets — a cleaned console, classic games and every cable you need, together at a friendlier price than buying it piece by piece. See the ready-to-play PC Engine bundles → — The shopkeeper, Japan 🇯🇵
