Introduction — From the Shopkeeper
Hello, it's the shopkeeper.
In the world of retro games, there are rare, mysterious masterpieces that make collectors overseas sigh, “Why was this only released in Japan?” The Sharp Twin Famicom, manufactured under license by Sharp, is one such machine.
The Famicom and the Disk System — two devices that defined a generation — united in a single console. And in this case, the bold red AN-500R model, carrying the proud bloodline of the Family Computer’s iconic color.
Actually, this very Twin Famicom used to be at my grandfather's house. My family placed it there hoping it might help keep his mind active. I don’t know if he ever played it, but I remember it sitting proudly next to the TV. Maybe that is why I feel such affection for this console today.
What Is the Sharp Twin Famicom?
The Sharp Twin Famicom AN-500R (Red) was released in 1986 exclusively in Japan. Unlike the standard Family Computer, which required the external Disk System add-on, the Twin Famicom combines both in one body.
It came in several versions:
AN-500R (Red)
AN-500B (Black)
Later revisions: AN-505R and AN-505B
This integration made it easier to play both ROM cartridges and Disk System games without juggling cables or hardware.

Maintenance & Restoration
The Twin Famicom is known for collecting dust internally and for the Disk System belt wearing out over time. At our shop:
Console is fully disassembled and cleaned inside and out
Rubber belt replaced with a new Japanese-made belt
Disk head cleaned and adjusted for stable reading
Contacts cleaned for reliable operation
Gameplay-tested with both cartridge and disk titles
This ensures stable operation today and makes future belt replacement easier for technicians or collectors.

FAQ
Q1. Does the Twin Famicom play both cartridges and Disk System games? Yes. It combines both systems in one. With a new belt and head cleaning, disk reads are stable.
Q2. Is it region-free for NES (USA) games? No. It is a Japan-region console. NES cartridges require an adapter.
Q3. How do I connect it to a modern TV? Use composite input or an AV-to-HDMI converter. Check your TV’s input compatibility.
Q4. What maintenance has been done? Drive belt replacement, disk head cleaning, internal disassembly cleaning, contact restoration, and full gameplay testing.
Q5. How long does the new belt last? It depends on environment and usage, but typically several years. Avoid heat and humidity for longer life.
